Chief Deputy - Steve Hansen
Chief Deputy Steve Hansen is a lifetime residence of Mason County. Born and raised in Victory Twp. where his family owned and operated a dairy farm for more than 100 years. Hansen’s Grandfather, William Lange, is a prior Mason County Undersheriff who served during the 1960’s.
Hansen attended Mason County Central High school and graduated in 1987. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy and served 4 years as an aviation hydraulics mechanic during Desert Storm. He returned back to Ludington in 1992 and attended West Shore Community College and graduated from the Criminal Justice Program in 1994.
Hansen was hired by the Lake Co Sheriff’s Office in 1995 as a full time Road Patrol Deputy. In 1998 he joined the Scottville Police Dept. also as a full time officer. In 1999 Steve Hansen was hired by former Sheriff Larry Stewart as a Road Patrol Deputy with the Mason County Sheriff’s Office. During his employment with the Mason County Sheriff’s Office he worked as a Marine Officer, Road Patrol Deputy, Detective, Undercover Narcotics Officer, and Road Sergeant. Current Sheriff Kim Cole, in Jan 2013, appointed Hansen to the position of Chief Deputy, where he oversees the day to day operations of the Road Patrol and Corrections.
Along with the duties of Chief Deputy, Hansen is an active member of the Mason County S.E.R.T. team . He also heads up the Crash Investigation Team and is a trained Accident Re-constructionist who has been recognized in the courts as an expert witness. Hansen is the departments Firearms Instructor and Armorer. Hansen is also currently an instructor at W.S.C.C., teaching classes in Crash Investigation and Firearms.
